What would you do to grow this site?

Invest into more content and links. SEO-wise, the site is in authority mode. Majority of new content targeting low competition keywords are indexing straight into the top 3 pages of Google, often on page 1. Currently, I'm only publishing about 3 to 4 articles per month, and not doing any active link building. Scaling content is the easiest win. Building links would help further strengthen the authority of the domain.

Affiliate marketing. All my competitors make much more money through affiliate marketing than ads, but I've never been able to figure it out and have always relied on ads to monetize.

Email marketing. I signed up for ConvertKit's free plan, and put up a form on the site, but I never did anything with the list. Building a list and funnel for new subs is an easy win I did not implement simply because I was focused on growing pageviews.

Social media. I have not done any social media at all.

Did you start the site from scratch or did you buy it? Is it built on an expired domain? Any 301 redirects used on the site? If so, will they be included in the sale?

The CommonCentsMom.com website was started in 2009 by a small personal finance blogger who did not understand SEO. It was more like a personal blog with short entries. It had good authority, and a very clean link profile and domain history. I purchased the site from the owner in 2019.

The original domain for this website was groovewallet.com. In late 2021, I decided to merge and rebrand Groovewallet into the CommonCentsMom.com domain and it worked out very nicely. We started ranking for many additional terms and got into Mediavine.

Both Groovewallet.com and CommonCentsMom.com will be included in the sale.

NOTE From Motion Invest.

For disclosure, the seller also owns SimpleRate.ca, which is a Canadian Finance site. This site will not be included in the sale.

What has been your biggest struggle with this site?

I had two big struggles with this site:

Knowing which direction to grow this site: I didn't know whether to turn CommonCentsMom into a NerdWallet/Bankrate kind of affiliate finance site and scale content around financial products, or turn. CommonCentsMom into a Mental Floss type model and try and grow pageviews through easier info keywords. CPMs are high ($30+ during peak season, and $23 during low season) so scaling info content makes sense. Turning it into a site like NerdWallet will be 100x more profitable than ads if executed correctly but I could never pull the trigger on it because of point #2 below.

Affiliate link monetization: Personal finance is one of the most lucrative niches for affiliate marketing. All the largest website sales are usually in the personal finance niche like The Penny Hoarder, Fundera, The Points Guy, etc. But I could never figure it out and never was able to get to the affiliate earnings that my competitors get. I'm more experienced in building ad-based websites and affiliate marketing is not my forte, but it would be interesting to see what an experienced affiliate marketer does with it.

What is included with the site?

CommonCentsMom.com and Groovewallet.com - both domains and all associated website files.

Convertkit email list - Although I have not done anything with the email list, there are still 1000+ subscribers.

How much time do you spend on the site? What tasks do you do?

For the past few months, I've only been working around 5 hours per week on the website. I work with one freelance writer, and I edit, format, and optimize the articles myself. I also write some of the content myself, and I go back and update older posts.

Do you outsource the content? If yes, are you able to pass along the writer?

Yes, currently working with one writer I hired from Problogger. The writer is willing to work with the new owner.

How did you build your backlinks? Were PBN's used?

No PBNs were used. CommonCentsMom.com had a strong history of natural links built up over the years since it was an early blog that started in 2009. All white hat link building.

How many total articles are on the site?

217 published articles on the site.

What are the expenses that are associated with the site? Specifically, what are the expenses that come from content creation, hosting, backlinks and domain registration?

Only expenses are domain, hosting, and the freelance writer I work with.

Why is there no income listed before June 2021?

From before June 2021, I just added analytics access to groovewallet.com (the domain it was on before redirecting to commoncentsmom.com domain). I did not really monetize before MediaVine. I had adsense for a few random weeks when I decided to try it out, but cpms were too low so I took them down immediately. I also tried ezoic for less than a month - way too many ads ruined user experience.
